Can You Say “Metrotham Con”?

Metrotham Con was a fan-run, multi-fandom convention in Chattanooga, TN. What a cool name for a con, combining “Metropolis” and “Gotham”! In honoring their theme for 2021, “Oh The Horror”, they had guest actors from movies like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. It was a small con, but there were plenty of things going on. Besides the usual vendors’ room, gaming room, and costume contest, there were special “After Dark” panels, karaoke, an adult vendor hall, and a dating game, plus much, much more. There were numerous panels all day long for all three days, plus celebs signing autographs and doing photo ops, and cosplayers roaming the halls. We were happy to be delivering two panels: “StarPodTrek Presents Star Trek on Paramount Plus” and “StarPodLog Presents Starlog- The Worlds Greatest Sci-Fi & Fantasy Magazine”. We were grateful for the friendly staff that helped us get set up with a projector and screen for our panels. One small disappointment was that we somehow missed Star Trek guest, Lisa Wilcox, who played Yuta on the TNG episode “The Vengeance Factor” (and was also in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4). After the con, we visited the River Valley Sculpture Garden in Chattanooga. We loved the exquisite metal sculptures and landscaping.

Nice to See Ya at ICCC

The Imperial Commissary Collectors Convention, aka ICCC, is a Star Wars focused event that is held annually in Nashville, Tennessee. It was held most recently on April 16-18, 2021 at the Sheraton Music City Hotel. More that just a convention, this has turned out to be an international family reunion with people coming from all over the globe. Showrunners Michael and Andrea Havens were gracious hosts that greeted everyone at the entrance. There were so many attendees this year that the line to get in wrapped around the building!

The vendors’ room was filled to capacity with rare, high-end toys and collectibles from around the world, including Model Trem, Lili Ledy, Palitoy, and more, thus demonstrating for the third time in a row why this con is THE place to be for Star Wars collectors. Cosplayers were also in full force with brilliant costumes representing everything from Star Wars to Star Trek to GI Joe. The model-makers with their remote controlled droids were a huge hit!

Many actors, artists, movie, toy, and gaming industry professionals were in attendance to mingle with fans, sign autographs, take pictures, and present panels. Dungeons and Dragons writer Jeff “Duck” Leason was a really nice and funny guy. Angie Mayhew was also in attendance with The Peter Mayhew Foundation to discuss this charity origination.

https://www.mayhewfoundation.org/

Given the choice to attend the next Star Wars Celebration or ICCCon, we would definitly choose ICCC!

Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo 2021

This was our third trip to Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo in Huntsville, AL. On the drive down from Nashville, TN, there were several huge model rockets along the roadside to welcome us to the city nicknamed Rocket City. The city earned its moniker by being home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. We attended the con sporting our replicas of NASA uniforms worn by the crew of Enterprise, the first space shuttle, which takes its name from the famous spaceship from our beloved Star Trek. We always enjoy this con for its laid back atmosphere and its great location at the Von Braun Center. Huntsville is also the hometown of our STARFLEET Internation ship, the USS Wernher von Braun. One of our shipmates, Laura, is a yearly vendor at the con, greeting everyone with a smile, and always being the most Trek-stocked vendor out of the huge vendors’ room.

This is one of the best cons for comic book collectors, having comic book guests and loads of vendors selling comic books of all kinds from all eras. We even did an interview with comic book writer Jim Shooter. Star Wars was represented by fan tables by the 501st Legion and the Rebel Legion. Both groups are there every year trouping in costume and happily taking pictures with fans.

We presented two panels this year. The first was “Star Trek 101”, a primer on all the Star Trek TV shows and movies for anyone new to Star Trek or anyone who just needs a review of this classic show that has endured over fifty years and has so much content that only the truest of fans can keep up. Our next panel was “Starlog: The World’s Greatest Sci-Fi and Fantasy Magazine”, covering all the things that were great about this magazine that kept us informed of all things geeky before there was an internet. We had a great time at our panels, receiving positive and enthusiastic feedback from the audiences. Next year’s expo has been scheduled for April 22-24, 2022. We plan to be there in costume and making a boom in Rocket City!

StarPodTrek Episode 4

Nayr and Kavura discuss the Star Trek-related articles in the exciting classic Starlog magazine issues 7 and 8 from 1977.

Nichelle Nichols Recruits for NASA:

Nichelle Nichols took on a new role of recruiting women and minorities to work for NASA.

Screenwriter Allan Scott Co-Writes Trek Movie Script:

Starlog interviews Allan Scott, who, along with Chris Bryant, is writing the new movie script. Surprisingly, neither of them were familiar with Star Trek or science fiction when they took the job.

Enterprise Model at Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum:

Nayr and Kavura discuss the original model of the USS Enterprise that is at the Air and Space Museum, along with other amazing historical models the museum houses.

“Ordinary” People in Space:

NASA starts its new “Payload Specialist” program which allows “ordinary people” to accompany astronauts on outer space missions. Well, as long as they meet the physical requirements, that is!

The Late Harlan Ellison:

Starlog’s printed interview with this angry writer is as entertaining as it is enlightening. Nayr and Kavura also discuss their own stories of Harlan Ellison.

Starlog Had So Much Trek Stuff:

Nayr and Kavura take you through these magazines looking for anything Trek or NASA-related. They find miscellaneous ads for Star Trek merchandise to be delightfully whimsical! Also, letters from Starlog readers, Star Trek conventions, and well-known Trek extraordinaires David Gerrold and Susan Sackett!
